Challenge
The key aspect of this project was ensuring our works smoothly interfaced with the existing Grade 2 listed building. Hovington played a lead role not only in the construction of the works, but ensuring that the designs from the Structural Engineer, Steel Frame Designer, Temporary Works Engineer and Architects were brought together to ensure the new car park was incorporated seamlessly to the existing building.
Approach
Hovington got involved in the project at an early stage to ensure we could offer our expertise in helping provide an opportunity to minimise the programme of works, foresee any problems at the construction phase along with cost savings to our Client. We made Value Engineering proposals which generated commercial & programme advantages for the client, all of which were adopted.
Solution
Due to the location of the new car park which sat below the existing hospital foundations it was initially envisaged by our Client that a contiguous pile system would have to be utilised but with the risks associated with working in close proximity to the existing building which is 141 years old. Hovington engineered a more cost effective way of completing the temporary works without the requirement for a piling system that saved time on the programme and unnecessary costs to our Client. We also incorporated an alternative roof deck option utilising composite construction which reduced programme time & curing times to provide benficial access to the follow on trades.
